Tim May, Dan Miller and Steve Smith at Uncle Bill’s July 11th, 2015

Three of our top American pickers will be here for a night of Bluegrass and American Music Saturday evening July 11th, 2015 at 7:30pm

“That was a lot of fun!” is what most people say after attending a Tim May and Dan Miller performance.  In addition to being talented musicians, Tim and Dan are also very entertaining and have a lot of fun on stage.  Their easy-going nature, good humor, and ability to craft an entertaining story, and tell a few good jokes, blends well with their presentation of acoustic music.

Tim and Dan perform vocal and instrumental acoustic music that ranges from bluegrass, to folk, swing, old-time, Celtic, and traditional country.  You’ll enjoy vocal songs from original country heroes like the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, bluegrass legends like Ralph Stanley, and country greats like Merle Haggard.  Then you’ll tap your feet to their instrumental repertoire, which starts with traditional fiddle tunes and extends into swing and jazz standards.  It is a very fun, entertaining, and enjoyable show.

About the Performers–

Tim May is one of Nashville’s multi-instrumentalist “go-to guys” for performing bands and recording artists.  He is also a favorite among music fans, as clearly indicated when Tim won the Nashville Scene Magazine’s 2012 Reader’s Poll for “Instrumentalist of the Year.”

For fifteen years Tim focused on his job as the guitar player for the Nashville-based bluegrass band Crucial Smith. When that band broke up in 2002 the job offers started pouring in. Highlights include touring with Patty Loveless, touring with Eddie Rabbit, touring Japan with John Cowan, playing on the all-star Rounder project Moody Bluegrass (and performing with the Moody Blues band at the Ryman Auditorium), performing on the Grand Ole Opry dozens of times with Mike Snider, and recording a bluegrass gospel project with Charlie Daniels.

Additionally, FGM Records has released Tim’s solo CD “Find My Way Back” and Tim is also featured in a FGM Records concert DVD, “Live in Kansas City,” with Brad Davis and Cody Kilby. In 2010 Tim released a duo CD with violinist Fred Carpenter.  That CD reached number one on the folk radio charts in September of 2010.  In 2011 the trio of Brad Davis, Dan Miller, and Tim May released a CD titled “Doves, Crows, and Buzzards” that has received rave reviews.

While there are plenty of great pickers in Nashville, Tim May adds great songwriting and singing to his list of many talents, which include being equally adept at resonator guitar, banjo, and mandolin.

When he is not on the road or in the recording studio Tim works building and repairing stringed instruments.  He is also the co-author of the eight-volume Flatpicking Essentials book/CD series and co-instructor on three instructional DVDs for guitar.  Most recently Dan Miller and Tim May have released several new books that focus on fundamental skills:  “The Guitar Player’s Practical Guide to Scales and Arpeggios,” “The Mandolin Player’s Practical Guide to Scales and Arpeggios,” “The Flatpicker’s Guide to Old-Time Music,” “The Flatpicker’s Guide to Irish Music,” and “The Guitar Player’s Guide to Rhythm, Timing, and Groove.”

Dan Miller has been the publisher and editor of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine since 1996. He has also co-authored a number of flatpicking books, including: “The Bluegrass Guitar Style of Charles Sawtelle” with Charles Sawtelle, “Flatpicking the Blues” with Brad Davis, “The Guitar Player’s Guide to Developing Speed, Accuracy and Tone” with Brad Davis, and the Eight Volume flatpicking course “Flatpicking Essentials” with Tim May. Dan Miller and Tim May have also produced three instructional DVDs for guitar players:  “Improving Speed, Accuracy, and Tone,” “Creating Solos,” and “An Approach to Improvisation.”

Most recently Dan Miller and Tim May have released several new books, as mentioned above, and Dan has written and released two additional books, “Learning Music By Ear for All Stringed Instruments,” and “The Guitar Player’s Guide to Developing Creative Solos.”   Tim May and Dan Miller also have been performing in a trio with their good friend Brad Davis (Davis Miller May) since 2005 and have been performing together as a duo since 2007.  Dan and Tim also spend a good deal of time each year traveling the country and teaching guitar and mandolin workshops and performing.
